On November 18, 2016, federal court Judge Mary Scriven appointed Kaplan Fox to the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee to represent 21st Century Oncology patients impacted by the medical data breach announced earlier this year. In March 2016, Kaplan Fox filed a federal class action lawsuit against 21st Century Oncology alleging that it violated state and federal consumer protection and medical privacy laws that exposed the medical information and social security numbers of 2.2 million patients. After the cases were consolidated in federal court in Tampa, Florida, Judge Scriven held an initial hearing at which she set an initial case schedule and appointed lead counsel.
Kaplan Fox has extensive experience representing patients impacted by medical data breaches. In addition to serving as court-appointed co-lead counsel on behalf of Horizon Healthcare patients, Kaplan Fox represents patients impacted by Anthem’s massive 2015 medical data hack.
