On October 7, 2019, Judge Edmond E. Chang, of the United States Court for the Northern District of Illinois, granted final approval to a $3 million settlement that will be distributed to workers throughout the United States who claimed that ComplyRight mishandled their personal information in connection with a data breach in Spring 2018. The lawsuit alleged that ComplyRight was provided with workers’ personal information by their employers, sometimes without their knowledge, in order to conduct payroll and other administrative functions. In July 2018, these workers were notified their personal information, including Social Security numbers, was accessed and downloaded by unauthorized persons. Under the terms of the settlement, class members could elect to receive up to a $50 cash payment or extended credit monitoring services, in addition to being able to seek recovery for up to $200 in losses for the data breach. Plaintiffs in the suit have also obtained important operational changes that will help prevent similar breaches in the future.
